All’epoca non esistevano i moderni impianti di riscaldamento e così il titolare del locale pensò di accendere del kerosene all’interno di un barile, pratica pericolosa ma all’epoca molto diffusa.
A un certo punto due uomini, probabilmente ubriachi e su di giri, iniziano a suonarsele di santa ragione per una donna di nome Lucille. Durante la colluttazione i due fanno cadere il barile, cospargendo di kerosene il pavimento. Locale distrutto e tutti in fuga ma nel trambusto generale il ventiquattrenne BB King, appena uscito, si accorge di aver lasciato all’interno del locale la sua chitarra. D’impulso, senza pensarci due volte, torna nell’immobile in fiamme e la mette in salvo.
A mente fredda BB King ripenserà a quanto fosse stato folle quel gesto che aveva messo a repentaglio la sua vita ma contemporaneamente avvertì che quell’episodio sarebbe stato l’inizio di una lunga storia d’amore con quella chitarra. A questo punto bisognava solo trovare un nome alla chitarra e la scelta cadde su Lucille, il nome della donna motivo della discussione.
